The architect and founder of Cha-design studio, winner of the All-Russian competition for young architects and participant in Workshop Russia, winner of the German Design Awards 2020, Irina Chun is a regular participant in BATIMAT RUSSIA. This year, at the recent exhibition within the HoReCa Design Area (Hotel, Residence, Café), she presented the concept called Cabin on a Yacht, with a fantastic bed in the center of the composition, the back of the bed is printed on a 3D printer. The shape of the headboard resembles the wings of seagulls soaring above the sea surface, symbolizing the free journey of the soul in a dream and in reality.
A yacht is a place where a person is left alone with himself, surrounded on all sides by the elements of the sea and wind. Away from the coast and everyday problems, he has an incomparable sense of freedom and flight, and dreams and fantasies seem more real than home and work. Creating a composition, Irina tried to avoid straight lines and regular-shaped figures – they are not in the nature of the sea. Decorative cache-pots with stabilized natural moss and bonsai, resembling flying green islands from the Avatar movie, draw you closer to a distant shore. The mixer is like the tail of a whale, ready to jump to the surface of the water and drench you with a warm sea wave. Following the nature of the waves, the designer has created a complete sense of open space, which arouses fantasy.
There is a massive armchair next to the bed, it was first presented at the BATIMAT RUSSIA 2019 exhibition. The one sitting in this armchair fills the whole space. For this item Irina received the honorary and well-deserved German Design Award 2020.
At the BATIMAT RUSSIA exhibition, Irina Chun gave a lecture on Design of the Future. She spoke about new technologies that are important and remarkable, but are changing very quickly. Something seeming revolutionary today becomes obsolete the very next year. The approach that always allows you to stay in trend does not change – it is of great importance.
That’s what Irina replied to the question “Who to learn from, how to immerse into the world of new technologies?”: “Actually, there is no one to learn new technologies from – they are new because they have not been used before. This is terra incognita, which you have to conquer by yourself. But you can (and should) learn a creative approach to your profession. There can be many teachers here – not only in design, but also in other forms of art. The main advice is to think wider, to go beyond the narrow concept of craft in a creative search. The main thing is to be open and learn lessons (life provides them in abundance). True creativity, in my opinion, is always a dialogue of artists, representatives of various fields of art. When creating, the artist carries a certain message in his work – the next one picks it up, develops the theme – and so on to infinity. For me (probably, like for many designers), something unexpected can serve as such a message and inspiration: a picture seen in the museum, an architectural detail, a girl’s dress or even a manhole cover somewhere in Japan.”
