The south-west of Moscow will soon do away with Khrushchev-era courtyards. The Russian-Spanish renovation project will change the life of old city blocks. The most noticeable detail of this joint project (Bofill Arquitectura – Barcelona architectural bureau, and Master’s Plan company) is the Entrance Gate – two futuristic skyscrapers on both sides of Vernadsky Avenue, connected with a covered passage. According to the concept, this is a symbol of the future district’s boundary.
In the district itself, in contrast to blocks with Khrushchev-era houses, the architects decided to go back of the oblong courtyards and the similar “bricks” of parallel houses towards diversity. Many buildings here will have sloping walls and unusual roofs. Residential buildings of different heights will form “urban blocks” with a private courtyard. Residential buildings will be combined with offices, as a result 6,950 workspaces will be added. There will be trees inside, children’s and sports grounds, with no parked cars – semi-underground garages will be provided in the houses.
The architects are planning to create an uninterrupted system of boulevards and squares for walking, there will be two squares for celebrations, festivals and meetings around Prospekt Vernadskogo metro station and MGIMO University. As planned by the architects, construction and relocation of five-storey apartment blocks residents to new buildings will take no more than 10 years and will be carried out in four stages. Residents will have an opportunity to choose a house where their new apartment will be located.
New schools and kindergartens, a polyclinic, a creativity center, a business and cultural complex, shopping facilities, fitness centers and a social protection center will be set up in the area.
